From September 9 to 12, 2026, the 5th Hong Kong International Biotechnology Convention and Exhibition (BIOHK2026) was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Unprecedented in scale, the convention brought together over 10,000 participants from more than 40 countries and regions, nearly 500 world-class speakers, and around 200 leading enterprises from home and abroad. Global dignitaries including Mr. John Lee Ka-chiu, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and Mr. Ban Ki-moon, the 8th Secretary-General of the United Nations, sent congratulatory messages, expressing the hope that the convention would unite global industry consensus and accelerate the translation of innovation into tangible outcomes. Aaron Gu, Partner of Han Kun Law Offices was invited to attend this flagship event and delivered a keynote speech titled "Analysis of Outbound Models for New Drugs and Emerging Transaction Trends: License and NewCo Empowering Hong Kong-Listed Biotech Companies", sharing cutting-edge industry insights and practical experience.
In the keynote speech, Aaron Gu provided a detailed breakdown of the current mainstream transaction structures for outbound new-drug deals, with a focus on the features, advantages and evolutionary trajectory of the two major outbound models — License and NewCo — and shed light on the key issues facing biotech companies in areas such as commercial collaboration architecture, IP portfolio strategy and regulatory compliance. In addition, drawing on recent market dynamics and deal experience, he analyzed the core considerations for companies at different stages of development when choosing BD transaction models, and shared insightful perspectives on the control of core pipeline assets ahead of Hong Kong IPO listings.
This edition of the forum marks the fifth anniversary of BIOHK. Through this platform, the organizer, the Hong Kong Biotechnology Organization, aims to strengthen connectivity between the biomedical industries of Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong and overseas across research, regulation, capital and industrial commercialization — not only continuing to build an exchange and collaboration platform that unites global life science forces, but also aligning with the nation's biomedical innovation needs and development strategy.
