Han Kun Law Offices LLP ("Han Kun Hong Kong") acted as the sole international legal counsel to the China-Portuguese Speaking Countries Cooperation and Development Fund Company Limited (the "Fund") in connection with the Fund's full subscription of the inaugural bond issuance by the New Development Bank ("NDB") in the Macau Special Administrative Region. The Lotus bonds involved a three-year, US$50 million private placement (the "Bonds"), the proceeds of which will be exclusively applied to support development projects in Brazil. The Bonds were recently registered and deposited with the Macau Central Securities Depository and Clearing Company Limited (MCSD).
Established by the BRICS nations, the NDB is a multilateral development bank mandated to finance infrastructure and sustainable development projects in BRICS countries, as well as other emerging economies and developing nations.
This transaction marks not only a significant step for the NDB in broadening its funding channels, but also a concrete demonstration of Macau's role as a "Financial Services Platform for Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries," further enriching its cross-border investment and financing landscape. The active participation of the Fund also highlights Macau's distinctive advantage as a bridge connecting Portuguese-speaking countries with global emerging market capital.
