On the afternoon of May 22, 2026, GCπ ("the General Counsel community") visited the Zhejiang Sub-Commission of the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC) for a small-group, in-depth closed-door seminar on foreign-related arbitration and cross-border investment practice, bringing together nearly 20 senior in-house legal executives from across Zhejiang. Alan Huang — a partner at Han Kun Law Offices ("Han Kun") and a CIETAC arbitrator — was invited to attend and gave a featured talk on "Development Trends in Cross-Border Commercial Dispute Resolution and Corporate Responses."
As a featured speaker at the seminar, Mr. Huang drew on the profound changes in today's international commercial environment and his front-line experience in cross-border dispute resolution. Speaking from the dual perspective of an arbitrator and a practicing lawyer, he addressed emerging trends in cross-border commercial dispute resolution mechanisms, the institutional advantages of international commercial arbitration, and the common pain points enterprises encounter in foreign-related disputes. He worked through the typical challenges that arise in dispute resolution and put forward practical pathways and recommendations for responding to cross-border commercial disputes.
He noted in particular that Chinese enterprises engaged in cross-border operations should pay close attention to the design of dispute resolution clauses, consistency across contract texts (particularly bilingual versions), the preservation and management of evidence, the use of interim measures, and arrangements for the recognition and enforcement of awards. He recommended moving risk prevention upstream so that it runs through the entire process — from contract signing and performance management to dispute response.
In the panel discussion that followed, Mr. Huang joined fellow CIETAC arbitrators Sun Hong and Wang Lixin in a multi-perspective dialogue with institutional representatives and senior in-house counsel on real-world challenges such as the negotiation of arbitration clauses, the selection of arbitrators, and the enforcement of cross-border awards.
