Work experience

Mr. Lui has a wide range of experience in handling complex, high-stakes commercial litigation, arbitration, and investigations across multiple jurisdictions. Focusing on dispute resolution, he is particularly recognized for his strong grasp of commercial objectives and his acumen for finding the right balance in negotiations outside the courtroom, without upsetting transactional dynamics among sophisticated commercial counterparties. His hybrid approach combines rigorous legal standards with practical commercial judgment to yield outcomes that are both legally defensible and commercially viable.
Prior to joining Han Kun, Mr. Lui worked at Kirkland & Ellis and Deacons. His work included advising some of the world's largest private equity and asset management firms, often on issues concerning corporate governance, GP-LP relations, boardroom disputes, redemption, immunity and conflict of laws. In addition to working with numerous Fortune 500 and Forbes Global 2000 companies, his engagement extended to state-owned enterprises, statutory bodies, and high-net-worth individuals. He has lent his expertise to clients from a broad range of industries, including finance, technology, genomics, cryptocurrency, renewable energy, forestry, healthcare, media, casino, and luxury goods.
Specific examples of Mr. Lui's courtroom experience include defending Big Four accounting firms in high-stakes audit negligence cases, often arising from collapsed Mainland China-based businesses formerly listed on major global exchanges. Mr. Lui is one of the few Hong Kong practitioners to have assisted in the defense of a major audit claim through a full trial before the High Court of Hong Kong. In addition, he has assisted liquidators in asset recovery efforts, pursued claims against former directors and officers, and advised boards of litigation trusts and companies on corporate fallouts, including collaborating with litigation funders and special situation experts.
Mr. Lui's breadth of commercial knowledge and expertise in dispute resolution enables him to advise international clients on their cross-border investments, including due diligence and compliance with Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and other issues such as reputation, international risks and sanctions, and white-collar crimes. He regularly collaborates with Han Kun's New York office to manage compliance projects and sanctions imposed by multilateral development banks (MDBs), and he has extensive experience in internal and regulatory investigations across Mainland China, Hong Kong SAR, the United States, Singapore, India, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Mr. Lui graduated with First Class Honors from the University of Hong Kong. He ranked first in Tort Law and received various legal and academic scholarships. He remains active in legal academic circles and has repeatedly been invited to contribute to legal publications with a global readership and is a chapter author of Tort Law and Practice in Hong Kong.
Mr. Lui holds admission in Hong Kong, England & Wales, and Australia.
