Mr. Lui has a wide range of experience in handling complex, high-stakes commercial litigations, arbitrations, and investigations across multiple jurisdictions. Focusing on dispute resolution, he is adept at delivering effective commercial solutions for clients.
Prior to joining Han Kun, Mr. Lui worked at Kirkland & Ellis and Deacons. His work included advising some of the world's largest private equity and asset management firms, often on issues concerning corporate governance, GP-LP relations, redemption and conflict of laws. In addition to working with numerous Fortune 500 and Forbes Global 2000 companies, his engagement extended to state-owned enterprises, statutory bodies, and high-net-worth individuals. He has lent his expertise to clients from a broad range of industries, including finance, technology, genomics, cryptocurrency, renewable energy, forestry, healthcare, media, casino, and luxury goods.
Specific examples of Mr. Lui's courtroom experience include defending Big Four accounting firms in high-stakes audit negligence cases, often arising from collapsed Mainland China-based businesses formerly listed on major global exchanges. Mr. Lui is one of the few Hong Kong practitioners to have assisted in the defense of a major audit claim through a full trial before the High Court of Hong Kong. In addition, he has assisted liquidators in asset recovery efforts, pursued claims against former directors and officers, and advised boards and companies on corporate fallouts, including collaborating with litigation funders.
Mr. Lui's breadth of commercial knowledge and expertise in dispute resolution enables him to advise international clients on their cross-border investments, including due diligence and compliance with Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and other issues such as reputation, international risks and sanctions, and white-collar crimes. He has also participated in internal and regulatory investigations across various jurisdictions, such as Mainland China, Hong Kong SAR, the United States, Singapore, and India.
Mr. Lui graduated with First Class Honors from the University of Hong Kong. He ranked first in Tort Law and received various legal and academic scholarships. He remains active in legal academic circles and has repeatedly been invited to contribute to legal publications with a global readership, and is a chapter author of Tort Law and Practice in Hong Kong.
