Work experience

Yan is a seasoned litigator who has spent over 20 years in top U.S. and China law firms guiding both emerging and established companies through IP, antitrust, and other business disputes. He currently serves as one of the firm's managing partners and leads the IP litigation practice, which has over 150 professionals. He routinely advises clients on matters that cover a wide range of technical disciplines and have cross-border implications.
Yan has considerable experience representing high-profile clients in IP disputes across a diverse portfolio of technologies, including mobile phones, automotives, electronics, medical devices, and pharmaceuticals. His practice also comprehensively spans competition issues, with a particular focus on anti-trust litigations and investigations.
Yan practices across the industry spectrum and is known for his leading role in significant cases with cutting-edge issues in recent years. These include multiple SEP/FRAND disputes against SEP superpowers including Nokia, Ericsson, Qualcomm, Interdigital, Huawei, and ZTE, in which he acted for both upstream and downstream phone-makers and automakers. His practice involves frontier issues including applications for anti-suit injunctive relief, handling the issue of exhaustion in SEP licensing schemes, and competition issues arising from seeking of remedies and asserting certain claims in IP licensing.
Yan is frequently asked to comment and lecture on IP issues and is a regular speaker at international conferences on strategic deliberations over topics on patent litigation. He previously taught at the Peking University Intellectual Property Law School and regularly provides opinions to the national and international press on IP and antitrust related issues.
When practicing in the U.S., Yan served as a senior in-house counsel for Broadcom and practiced at Weil and MoFo for approximately ten years.
